App to track a phone
You’re looking for a phone tracking app for one of two reasons: you lost your phone, or you need to know where someone else is. The tech is good, but the "best" app is completely different for each situation.
Most people already have a free phone tracker. If you have a Google account on an Android, you have Find My Device. On an iPhone, you have Find My. Both are for finding your own lost phone. You log into a browser, see its last location, make it scream (even on silent), or wipe its data if it's really gone. They're built-in and they just work.
But tracking someone else’s phone is a different story.
The Parental Control Angle
This is the main reason these apps exist. You want to make sure your kids are safe. These apps are less about spying and more about managing your own anxiety.
- Google Family Link: If your family uses Android, this is the free, obvious place to start. You can see your child's location, set screen time limits, and approve app downloads.
- Life360: This one is popular because it creates a private map or "circle" for your family. Its crash detection and driving reports are what sell it for parents of new drivers.
- FamiSafe: This app is built around geofencing. You get an alert when your kid gets to school or leaves a friend's house.
I have a friend who was convinced her son had skipped tutoring one afternoon. She was about to drive over there, ready for a fight, but checked the app first. His phone was right there in the library; he'd just moved to a different table. A five-alarm panic disappeared in a second. That's what these are really for.
