Alright, you need an app to track someone. The reasons are your own—maybe you're keeping tabs on your kids, coordinating with a partner, or monitoring employees. The app world is basically split into a few different approaches to this.
The Default: Apple's "Find My"
If everyone involved has an iPhone, the conversation should start and end with Apple's built-in "Find My" app. It's a combination of the old "Find My iPhone" and "Find My Friends," and it's already on the phone. You can share your location for an hour, the rest of the day, or forever. Once you're connected, you can see each other on a map, get directions, and set up notifications for when someone leaves or arrives at a location. It’s free, it works, and it doesn't kill your battery.
Family Safety Apps
This is the most crowded category. These apps are built for family safety and usually bundle location tracking with other features.
-
Life360: Probably the best-known of the bunch. It creates a private map or "Circle" for your family to share locations in real-time. But it also does a lot more, like crash detection, roadside assistance, and driving reports that show speed and phone usage. Many of the most useful features require a subscription.
-
Qustodio: This is a full-on parental control app that also has solid location tracking. It gives you a timeline of where they've been, real-time tracking, and lets you set up "geofenced" zones that send an alert when your kid enters or leaves an area. It's a good choice if you also want to manage screen time and filter content.
-
FamiSafe: This one is strong on location features and adds detailed driving reports, which is great for parents of new teen drivers. You can see their top speed and distance traveled, and even get alerts if they go over a speed limit you set.
