daily routine for waves

April 19, 2026by Mindcrate Team

Forget the magic pomades and fancy brushes. The only secret to getting waves is routine. It's about doing the same boring, effective steps every single day until the pattern sets.

Waves are just trained curls. Your job is to train them. This is how.

The Morning Session (5-15 mins)

Don't just rip your durag off and start the day. This is your first chance to reinforce the pattern.

  1. Unrag and Assess: Take the durag off slowly. See how your hair held up overnight.
  2. Moisturize (Lightly): Never brush dry hair. A light, water-based moisturizer or leave-in conditioner is all you need. Think hydration, not grease. Dry brushing causes breakage and frizz, which will set you back.
  3. Brush Work: 10-15 minutes is the floor. Grab your medium brush and get started. Brush from your crown out to your hairline. Use a mirror to keep your angles consistent. If you can't see your crown, you're not brushing it right.

Midday Touch-up (Optional, but do it)

Got a spare 5 minutes? Use them. A quick brush session reinforces the pattern. Keep a brush at work or in your car. It's the small sessions that make the biggest difference.

The Night Session (20-30+ mins)

This is the most important part of your day. Don't skip it.

  1. Long Brush Session: This is where the real training happens. Put in at least 20-30 minutes of straight brushing. Work all your anglesโ€”top, back, and especially your sides. Give your weak spots the most attention.
  2. Apply Product (If Needed): After brushing, you can use a little pomade or wave butter to hold things in place. Don't overdo it. Too much product just causes buildup.
  3. Soft Brush Finish: Go over your hair with a soft brush for a few minutes. This lays everything down and adds shine.
  4. Compress: Rag up. A silky or satin durag holds that pattern in place while you sleep. If you don't wear a durag at night, you're wasting every minute you spent brushing.

Washing, Cutting, and Waiting

Washing (1-2 Times a Week) Don't wash your hair daily. You'll strip the natural oils that help it lay down. When you do wash, use the "wash and style" method: apply shampoo and brush it in the direction of your waves before you rinse. A lot of guys rinse with the durag on to keep everything in place.

The Haircut Start with a low, even cut, around a #2 "with the grain." After a while, you can start "wolfing"โ€”letting your hair grow longer to train deeper waves. But never cut your hair shorter than its natural curl length.

I remember once, I was wolfing for about 6 weeks and my hair was a mess. I had a job interview at 4:17 PM for a data entry job I didn't want but needed. I spent an hour before I left doing a wash and style, compressing it with two durags, and hoping for the best. The waves were laid down, but the interviewer spent the whole time staring at the durag line on my forehead. I did not get the job.

Patience. That's the last step. You won't get deep, connected waves in a week. It can take weeks or months to see real results, depending on your hair. Consistency is the only thing that works.
